How to create a custom cover

Setting Up Your Album

While we are not able to support cover templates for all our 150+ lab partners, we have made it possible to create custom covers in Fundy Designer with the help of your chosen lab. You can do this by getting either a cover template or cover specs from your chosen lab, which you can then upload to Fundy using one of the methods listed below:

1. Under the new Design Wizard:

2. Under the Custom Cover tab of the Album Options window (v11 and older):

Using a Template

Some album companies provide cover templates. Save yours as a JPEG or PNG before uploading to Fundy Designer. You can either add it while setting up your project in the Design Wizard (see #1 above) or you can add it to an album that's already been designed.

To do this, click the pencil icon, go to the Custom Cover tab, click Select File, choose your template, then click Next to save. Once done, design the cover like any other spread. When finished, go to View > Toggle Guide or press G to turn off guides. Export for print, and carefully review your cover and spreads before, during, and after exporting to ensure everything looks perfect before uploading to your print lab.

**NOTE: Do not upload your image as the cover template. This feature is specifically for cover template guides that will help you ensure your image is placed correctly before exporting. The template will not be exported with your album when exporting for print.

Custom Proofer Covers

To upload your own cover to Design Proofer, it needs to be exactly half the width and the same height as your album. A back cover is also required for Design Proofer. Both cover files must be named Cover.jpg and Back Cover.jpg, respectively, to work in Design Proofer.

If you have created a photo wrap cover, you will need to export it for proofer then cut that spread in half in Photoshop or another editing software. The files must then be renamed to Cover.jpg and BackCover.jpg.

Using a cover in Fundy:

  • Create a "Custom Cover" in Fundy just to export for Proofer. Once the album is approved, switch back to the real cover template and export your album
  • In order to keep track of your albums and their covers in Fundy, duplicate the album and rename them accordingly (for print/for proofer). Export for Proofer the album with the proofer cover. Once that is approved by your client, export for print link the other album with the finalized cover and send to your lab

Simulating a Basic/Material Cover

Some labs, such as Miller's, have downloadable jpegs of their cover materials that you can use to represent how a cover may look. To do this, you will need to download the jpeg file and resize it to be half the width and the same height as your album spreads, then import that into your image well and drop it on the cover.

If your cover is a solid color, you also have the option to use the background color feature to fill the cover.

With either of these options, you can use the text feature to simulate any text that will be embossed/imprinted on your cover.
